Abstract

A few decades ago , a book was just one thing : a stack of paper pages bound between covers . Today , readers can read the same content in a variety of forms and formats , some of them on paper and some of them digital . This has prompted researchers to study the impacts of a book ' s form on reading – to compare the reading affordances of paper and digital books , and to evaluate how these affordances impact reading comprehension . As of this writing , the consensus is that comprehension differences between paper and digital appear to be minor , which raises the question : Might a different kind of book offer better affordances for reading ? The main argument in this paper is that scrolls provide a range and quality of affordances for reading that our modern books , whether bound or digital , simply cannot match . As of this writing , this remains a commonsense argument without any research backing , for there appears to be no published research in which the use of scrolls is contemplated . As a consequence , there is an opportunity here for enterprising researchers to break new ground .
