ore Female Engineers Please.
According to the US Department
of Commerce, women hold
only around 24 percent of the STEM or
Science, Technology, Engineering, and
Mathematics jobs in the USA. When
compared to the other jobs that women
hold, it accounts to around 48 percent of
all jobs in the country. It has also been
noted that only 20 percent of women
in the country have bachelor’s degree
in engineering, physics, and computer
science. This is also one of the reasons
for backlog in the field of new technology
innovation.
Throughout the country, the experts are
commenting that the women are the
minorities in the field of STEM. This is
what is hampering the country’s ability
to develop new arenas of addressing
technological and scientific challenges.
Gradually, there are universities, colleges,
and educational institutions that are
encouraging female students to take part
in studies and career related to STEM
disciplines.
Are you planning to get into engineering?
You’d be making a positive change in the
scenario of female versus male engineers.
Even though the total number of female
engineers in the United States has
increased, there is still a big difference in
the ratio of men vs women engineers, and
serious efforts are being made to bridge
that gap. There is also a serious dearth of
female role models in engineering. Having
role models in the field of engineering will
encourage more girls to accept the field of
study and to be engineers.
If engineering ideas need to reach the
common mass, it is very important to
promote female role models in the field.
This will in turn curb the fears of women
to enter the field of engineering. According
to the experts, there is a sufficient number
of women in the fields of medical and
law. So, why are women lagging behind in
engineering? If they try, they definitely can
compete with men in this field as well.
