"As you can see the virus reacts more violently the more it has deteriorated, so for the sake of the subject, quick intervention is required."

Sarah found herself nodding.

"I am sure some of you are wondering why we do not administer the anti-virus to those we know are infected before they die," Special Agent Lancaster continued and a murmur of agreement went round the room. "When introduced into a living host the anti-virus causes the 8977 to activate in turn killing the host. So far no treatment has been developed which will allow a host to be cured without killing them."

That did rather defeat the object.

"You are all here today because we would like you to be part of the Special Order Seventeen Network," Special Agent Lancaster said in a very serious manner. "You will not be asked to deal with 8977 revenants directly, that is what my agency is for, however, we cannot do our jobs without your help. If you agree you will be issued with an app which will allow you to check deaths in your area with the database of infected individuals. All you have to do it set an alert on the app for any you find and my agency will do the rest. You will also be asked to report any suspicious survivals in case of those who have not been flagged."

It sounded very well organised. Sarah couldn't help wondering how they did it before smart phones.

"Thank you all for your time. If you are willing to become part of the network or have any questions, please see me or any of the agents on duty. There is further training available for those who would like to take it. If you do not wish to take part, we thank you for coming and remind you that you signed the official secrets act when you entered this seminar. Good day."

The way Special Agent Lancaster smiled promised horrible retribution if anyone leaked the information, Sarah could tell.
