The Monaco Piece d’Art features a matte blue dial, nickel-plated indexes with red dot detail and white tritium ONE-OF-A-KIND In addition to the Monaco 2009-2019 Limited Edition Anniversary Watch, TAG Heuer celebrates Monaco’s fiftieth anniversary by creating a one-of- a-kind Monaco Piece d’Art, a restored and decorated version of an original Heuer Monaco from 1969. Phillips auctioned the watch during its Game Changers auction on December 10 in New York and donated the $81,250 sale price to United Way of New York City. The Monaco Piece d’Art is a Monaco as you’ve never seen it. Starting with an original Caliber 11 movement, and attaching an original Heuer steel bracelet, TAG Heuer has created a decorated ode to the Monaco, complete with groovy 1969-style engravings on the movement’s bridges, all fully visible with the newly attached clear sapphire caseback. The words “Cal. eleven” can be seen on the chronograph bridge for the minute and seconds counter while “Monaco” appears on the hour counter bridge. TAG Heuer notes that the two bridges were initially too thin to handle the engravings and each had to be re-made. In addition to the engraving, TAG Heuer also upgraded the finish of the entire Caliber 11 to now feature beveling and straight graining on all the components, mirror polishing all functional surfaces and screw heads, and adding three new jewels to bring the total to twenty rubies. TAG Heuer also replaced the black numerals on the date disc with red numerals. 70 | INTERNATIONAL WATCH | WINTER 2020 The Monaco Piece d’Art dial’s newly red date numerals.
