DISTANCE DEBUTS
I
nstead of reading this during the original Baselworld or SIHH dates in late April, you’re likely checking us out
weeks earlier, and digitally (for now) from the safety and comfort of your home. At least we hope you are.
As all our lives have been upended in the past few months, collectors
who are both safe and sound have continued to enjoy keeping up with
news and updates about their favorite dials, cases and straps, though
perhaps with a new sense of perspective.
We like to think we’re providing our readers with images and
information to feed a pleasurable pastime. Whether a hobby or an
obsession, a business or a lark, watch collecting remains a source of
comfort for many of our readers. And we’re here to assist.
Just prior to the start of our move to all-remote activity, the watch
brands under the LVMH umbrella released a series of new watches, many
of which we documented online early this year. Inside this issue you’ll
find more about the 2020 debuts from those brands, including new
watches from Bulgari, Hublot, Zenith and TAG Heuer.
After seeing those debuts, it became apparent that these watch-
makers, as different as they are from each other, remain convinced of
the need to make fine, mechanical watches for women. In fact, Zenith’s
primary launch in January was its Defy Midnight collection, a super-
versatile set of diamond-flecked 36mm watches powered by Zenith’s

own Elite 670 automatic movement.
Bulgari, which has reset the industry’s record books in recent years
with an incredible series of ultra-thin men’s watches, also focused on
feminine watches by launching a tourbillon-set version of its already
well-known Serpenti Seduttori (see above). These are high-end,
diamond-set watches of course, but as Bulgari Managing Director
Antoine Pin told us in January, we can expect additional collections of
mechanical watches from Bulgari for women.
On the same topic, inside we highlight new watches for women from
Alexandre Meerson, one of our favorite watch designers, starting on
page 46.
We hope you enjoy these debuts while also maintaining your social
distance.
