BASELREVIEW2017 Classic & Dress GLASHÜTTE ORIGINAL SIXTIES ICONIC SQUARE THE GLASHÜTTE, GERMANY, based watchmaker introduced a collection of five Sixties Iconic Square chronographs, released in sets of twenty-five of each color, with dials made by its own dial maker in Pforzheim. These chronographs, like last year’s round-cased Sixties Iconic collection, again recall the firm’s “Spezimatic” models produced in the 1960s. Many of those Spezimatic watches incorporated typical 1960s design elements, including a square cushion shape, domed dials, curved hands and unusually shaped Arabic numerals. All these elements can be seen in the new models, which also feature dial colors inspired by the era. Where you see green, blue, grey, orange and red, Glashütte Original sees Forest, Ocean, Graphite, Tangerine and Fire. The five steel models in the Sixties Iconic Square Collection measure 41.35mm x 41.35 mm, and are powered by in-house automatic chronograph caliber 39-34. All are fitted with a matching Louisiana alligator leather strap: brown for the models featuring green or ‘tangerine’ dials, with black on the grey, blue and red dials. Production of the five models in the Sixties Iconic Square Collection is limited to twenty-five pieces each hue. Price: $9,700. ZENITH HERITAGE 146 ZENITH RETROFITS AN EL PRIMERO fast-beat chronograph movement into one of its classic 1960s designs to create this latest watch. Zenith underscores the new watch’s unabashedly retro look with the choice of a tropical brown dial or a blue dial atop a typical date-free 1960s two-counter chronograph layout and a 38mm-diameter steel case. This new Zenith Heritage 146 offers a chronograph with central sweep-seconds hand and 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock and a tachometric scale. Instead of the earlier model’s 18,000-vph rhythm, the El Primero Calibre 4069 inside this new homage beats at 36,000 vibrations per hour. Regulated and adjusted to meet chronometer standards, the column- wheel chronograph caliber drives a tenth-of-a-second display and has a power reserve that exceeds fifty hours. The very up-to-date screw-down sapphire crystal caseback has an anti-reflective treatment on both sides, though the strap is a decidedly retro racing-style offered in a choice of brown or blue rubber-lined calfskin leather. Price: $7,700. 116 | INTERNATIONAL WATCH | SUMMER 2017
