THIS IS OUR MOMENT . The definitive story of Alpha Kappa Alpha told by an award-winning filmmaker and being streamed to all of America to educate and uplift . It ’ s the official documentary film Twenty Pearls that premiered in March as the first feature release on Comcast ’ s new “ Black Experience on Xfinity ” channel .
Written and directed by Soror Deborah Riley Draper ( who ’ s own story follows in this issue ,) Twenty Pearls begins with the story of our founding at Howard University in 1908 , and moves throughout the decades chronicling our impact on America ’ s watershed events . The film is aptly narrated by Soror Phylicia Rashãd , who was initiated AKA at Howard University in 1968 .
Through historical photos , films and interviews , Twenty Pearls showcases how Alpha Kappa Alpha members left their mark on such historic events as World War I , the Harlem Renaissance , the Great Depression , World War II , the Civil Rights Movement , the NASA space race , the Women ’ s March , all the way to the election of soror Kamala Harris as the first woman , African-American and Asian-American Vice President of the United States .
