COLLEGE PRESIDENCY FIRESIDE CHAT
and growth opportunities at HBCUs and Predominately Black Institutions ( PBIs ). The summit was attended by 23 college presidents who are members of the sorority .
“ Women in college leadership are so important . We belong at the table .” said Supreme Basileus Glover . “ HBCUs were established 185 years ago , immediately after slavery , so that we can develop into the young women we were destined to be . It ’ s important to be at that table , stay at that table and bring others with us .”
Soror Glover shared five traits that sorors seeking to become college presidents must possess :
• Demonstrate good communications skills . Write and talk to express , not to impress .
• Be a problem-solver . Work with the people around you across all aspects of higher education .
• Respect different views . Diversity of ideas keeps us going . Everyone should not think alike .
• Clearly articulate your position . Learn the art of pivoting . Seek first to understand and then to be understood .
• Possess a commitment to higher learning . Education is the new civil right and higher education unlocks doors .
President Glover offered practical advice to aspiring college presidents and encouraged them to start now . Creating a plan , finding a sponsor , and networking are steps to be proactive . With focus and hard work , you will avoid naysayers and can refine your goals . She also encouraged aspirants to research the type of institution you want to work for .

“ ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA IS MAKING ITS MARK IN HIGHER

EDUCATION .”

When asked what a typical day looks like for a college president , President Glover explained that she starts each day with prayer . She then meets with her team of strong , talented direct reports . She is always prepared to address the needs and concerns of students and the community . She shared that each day there will be something you have to handle . She encourages anyone who seeks a college presidency to “ work your way through it , pray your way through it .” Her greatest fulfillment comes from seeing students succeed . “ When you see students walk across that stage and you hand them their diploma , it really is a blessing .”
