ADAMSON UNIVERSITY:
ITSO STRIDING OUT HIGH
By Adrian H. Sablan
Assistant Division Chief, IPOPHL
Proof that if top officials of a university throw its full support squarely behind an initiative, the rate of success runs high. In such a way can the story of Adamson University be simply described, insofar as their efforts to promote intellectual property( IP) awareness are concerned( i. e. the essence and benefits of technological creation and innovation, and the imperatives of patenting, or protecting IP rights). The Adamson University is a member of the Innovation and Technology Support Office( ITSO), a network of patent libraries across the Philippines composed of higher education institutions, research and development institutes, as well as support arms of industrial establishments.
ITSO is a flagship program of the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines( IPOPHL), launched in late 2010 primarily to increase the innovation performance of the country by putting up patent libraries in areas with high potential for patent and IP related activities. Patenting is a legal and procedural mode of securing protection for the IP rights of an invention that may be significantly useful to the business industry, have inherent promise of improving the quality of human life, or that may be potential to rake in economic returns that will benefit not only the inventor but also the national economy.
Manned by a lean staff of four academic personnel, the ITSO office of Adamson University has managed, since its enlistment to the network, to perform the functions of an ITSO as spelled out in the ITSO Operations Manual( which every ITSO host institution pledges to accomplish consistently). In February and November 2013, Adamson was able to file two patent applications with IPOPHL, through the Patent Protection Incentive Package( PPIP), an incentivizing project of IPOPHL that aims to muster as many as one thousand patent applications from the ITSOs, with all fees pertinent to filing the patent application absolutely waived free. One of these technologies by Adamson filed for patent protection with IPOPHL was also filed through the Patent Cooperation Treaty, an international patenting program facilitated through IPOPHL by another government agency. Adamson, with the help of its engineering students, is known for inventing a car that runs without using fuel. •
