Service Architecture is a fast emerging
phenomenon in the market : insights on what
service architecture is and how to deliver from
multiple perspectives
“As an architect, you design for the present, with an awareness
of the past, for a future which is essentially unknown.” Norman
Foster, one of Britain's most prolific architects.
What is Service Architecture and why?
Today organisations are under persistent pressure to stay
responsive
to volatile business environments. It is imperative that IT re-orient with the
Business to effectively support the changing business needs. As a result,
enterprise transformation, IT modernization a service disaggregation have
become more common. It is widely recognised that the service management
has to go beyond processes and deliver smarter approaches and flexible oper-
ating models.
The Service Architecture is a fundamental organisation of IT services and a
clear representation of how those services are supported. It is an effective
communication tool to socialise IT within the Business for better alignment and
enables the Business to make key IT decisions (not IT to make IT decisions any
more). It improves the Business understanding of what IT services are being
offered and how they are operated.
Where Service Architecture fits in an enterprise?
The Service Architecture understands the data, application and technology
architectures (at a high level), constructs a service wrap- around which
then can be offered as an IT service to the Business and easily consumed by
the end users.
It acts as a true conduit to build a
strong Business-IT relationship and
deliver enterprise level service
management.
By this means, if the Business strategy changes it becomes natural for the
Business to review the IT services and apply changes to technologies. IT
