2. ITIL only applies to operations.
To be fair, this was somewhat true in version two of the ITIL books, which were released back in 2001. With the 2007 release of version three, however, this idea was thoroughly laid to rest. ITIL concepts apply to all of IT and help IT organizations better deliver services to customers. This includes everything from developing a solid IT strategy that aligns with customer needs to designing and delivering IT services( which compliments and dovetails with project management best practice concepts like SDLC, Agile / Scrum, etc.). When people go through ITIL training(* cough cough * ITIL Foundation class * cough cough *), they discover that IT operations is only one of the five major phases in the IT Service Management lifecycle. Thus, anyone in IT will benefit from the ideas in the ITIL books.
3. ITIL doesn’ t work in an Agile environment.
Similar to the first point, many people think IT Service Management concepts are in conflict with a lightweight, Agile philosophy. In fact, many developers who use an Agile method of working( Scrum, SAFe, etc.) have no interest in, or are actively disengaged, when it comes to learning about ITIL.
For an IT organization to be successful, however, everyone in IT must work together to deliver exceptional products and services. Developers do better when they understand the big picture – and the rest of IT( operations, etc.) does better when they understand how to deliver those exceptional products and services quickly and accurately, as the Agile philosophy teaches. The idea that ITSM and Agile are at odds with one another is simply untrue. In fact, we’ ve helped a number of customers implement ITSM concepts using Scrum ourselves.
