Keeping Youth
Sports Safe
Aimee Shilling
Along with heading back to school, many families are gearing up for fall sports. While
many programs have likely been practicing throughout the summer, the fall season brings
about an increase in game and practice schedules.
Youth sports are a valuable tool in a child’s development. They can foster a sense of
teamwork, dedication, and perseverance that helps prepare kids for life’s challenges.
However, they also have their own set of dangers, especially as more sports become
year round, rather than seasonal activities. Here are a few tips to help keep your kids safe
while they enjoy the benefits of youth sports.

Make sure that your child receives a
proper physical prior to beginning any activity. While this is a requirement for many
programs, it is not always the case. Even
if the program doesn’t require a physical,
it’s always best to consult your physician
before allowing your child to participate.
Cross Train
An Alaskan filmmaker discovers the power
of grounding/earthing as he heals himself.
He then takes this knowledge back to his
hometown Haines Alaska where the town’s
people suffer from pain and other health
issues. As the towns people learn to ground
their bare feet to the ground to heal themselves he witnesses and film the miraculous
event.

With the advent of traveling teams, many
sports are now played year round. As a
result, kids are experiencing overuse and
overtraining injuries at younger ages.
Our family’s solution has been to make
sure that our kids aren’t playing the same
sports every season, but rather rotating
through a few sports that they enjoy. If
you choose to allow your child to play the
same sport year round, make sure that
they are incorporating appropriate cross
training into their routine. A balanced athlete is typically more injury resistant, along with
being well rounded on the playing field.
