Why You Should Vote In
DISTRICT
Both candidates agree that district 7, that is made up predominantly of North Memphis,
Douglass, Frayser, Harbor Town and a small portion of Raleigh is a very diverse area. The
area is predominantly African American and is host to varying socio-economic backgrounds and households. For example, Harbor Town’s affluent community boasts some of
Memphis’ higher income status’ but is lacking amenities such as a grocery store. While
the Ridge Grove community in the northern section of Frayser has a grocery store but
suffers with joblessness, crime and blight.
In speaking to residents of District Seven, they are less than optimistic in the outcome of
the district seven runoff. Residents of Frayser who have created a strategic plan were disappointed when the plan ran into financial road blocks in previous city council budget
votes. The plan focused on issues that are specific to the Frayser community such as transportation improvements, but can be echoed in other parts of the city.
The Douglass community has seen a spike in violent crime such as a recent triple murder
and other murders prior to that. While the community has solidified its position as one of
Memphis’ most historic, it is the decline of industry and opportunities in employment
that has led to its decline.
The importance of the winner’s vote at the council will have major implications; ranging
from PILOTS for businesses, the re-development of Raleigh Springs Mall to the reinstatement of benefits for police, fire and their retirees and more.
If you’re undecided as to whether you should vote...or not...ask yourself these two questions. 1. Am I satisfied with the condition of my community? 2. Why are other communities thriving and mine is not? Want to know more about the candidates? We got you covered! Go to www.ItAllAboutMemphis.com and watch the video of both candidates.
