Some think only about ‘me, my four and no more’. Others will say won’t make a difference, because the money not spent on this day will be ‘made up’ on the following days. Yet others don’t and won’t see the potential impact. But can it have an impact? Last year, in light of the growing Black Lives Matter movement, the social media phenomenon #NotOneDime moved across social media. As highlighted in the New York Times article of December 6, 2014, “Looking for the Effects of the Black Friday Boycott”, sales were down 11 percent, even though the retailers tried to ignore the obvious presence of this protest covered by many major news outlets. Should Black people boycott Black Friday? Yes. But we must look past this particular day. What do you mean? The point of this boycott is to create a behavioral shift in how we address our economic strength. Right now in Shelby County, Black business produces less than 1 percent of the business receipts in a county that is 60% percent Black, anchored by a city that’s almost 70 percent Black. Even while we look at the role of the city of Memphis, Shelby County, and state elected officials to fix this inequity, we must do our part with how we spend our money. After all, freedom ain’t free. Telling everybody that your evil, low-down, dirty dog spouse is leaving you can backfire if, or when God restores your marriage. Your friends and family will still have the negative image of your spouse that you inscribed in their imaginations and they will view him or her as someone who abuses and manipulates the one they supposedly love.
