ECONOMY AND MARKET
All Eyes on Mexico
The pandemic caused a slump in sales in 2020-2021 , but Italian manufacturers of plastics and rubber processing machinery , equipment , and moulds - with some 170 united in the trade association Amaplast - continue to see Mexico as a primary destination . In the first nine months of 2021 , exports exceeded 60 million euros in value and this Latin American country has almost always figured in the top ten markets for Italian sales in this industry ( peaking at third in 2016 ), with an average growth rate of 4 % over the past decade . According to estimates by the local association Anipac , the Mexican plastics industry accounts for 5 % of Mexican GDP in manufacturing . There are some 3,600 converters employing a workforce of over 190,000 people . The close commercial relations with the United States are another source of interest among Italian companies in a market that shows significant signs of growth , with demand increasingly oriented towards cutting-edge , and above all green , technologies . Not unsurprisingly , one of the main themes of the Plastimagen 2022 specialized exhibition ( Mexico City , 8-11 March ) is the circular economy . There were more than 20 Italian companies in the collective - coordinated by Amaplast and the largest European presence by area , with over 370 square metres - to showcase their technologically advanced solutions for producing products with less energy using biobased and low-environmental-impact materials , and for recycling post consumers plastics into secondary raw materials . The following Amaplast member companies took part in the national pavilion : Bausano & Figli , BMB , Borghi , Colines , Frigosystem , Industrial Frigo , Itib Machinery International , Macchi , Olmas , OMG srl , Previero N ./ Sorema , Sica , Tecnova , Tria , Union . What ’ s more , the Mexican exhibition ha been an occasion to present the first edition of Greenplast to the local market . Organized by the Amaplast service agency Promaplast srl , the new exhibition-convention , taking place in Milan from the 3rd to the 6th of May 2022 , is dedicated to materials , technologies , and conversion processes with a focus on sustainability , recovery , recycling , and energy efficiency .

of the current year , the surge in orders from Italian customers mainly regards machinery and complete processing lines . Exports are also playing a decisive role and are expected to return to a value on the order of 3 billion euros , giving a boost to the balance of trade . Indeed , 8 of the top 10 Italian export destination countries , collectively absorbing nearly 60 % of the total , show strong growth in demand ,
with + 17 % from Poland and + 83 % from China . Orders received in the first three quarters of the year , both from Italian and foreign customers , cover production for the next six months and mainly regard machinery . The replacement parts segment , while in the positive range , appears somewhat less dynamic . As regards applications , it is not surprising to see the highest and most sustained demand for technology from the packaging and medical sectors , while construction and automotive travel at more moderate speeds . “ Naturally ,” adds Previero , “ various factors of instability that arose and worsened over the past year - from raw materials costs to difficulty in procuring components , from an increase in energy and transport costs to restrictions on personal mobility - are still unresolved and continue to be sources of concern for companies .” However , the clear recovery recorded in 2021 - with the first signs of an upswing already observed in the last months of 2020 - gives us good reason to expect performance beyond pre-crisis levels already next year . “ This ”, emphasizes Previero , ” confirms the robust response capacity of companies in the industry , deriving typically from their flexibility . Faced with the challenges posed by the context and markets , the companies have again succeeded in developing tailor-made solutions in terms of technological content , sustainability , and efficiency .”
