Seniors help lead Dogs to fifth straight playoff appearance
In recent years playoffs have become a mainstay in New Waverly over the last five years , but this year it took a little extra work to keep that streak alive .
The Bulldogs came back from their bye week needing to win two of their final three games and opened up with one of the best in Woodville . While it wasn ’ t the outcome New Waverly would have hoped , their attention turned to Kountze and Trinity .
New Waverly took those two games to slip back into the fourth seed from District 12 , 3A-DII spot to make the postseason after New Waverly faced several injuries in the early part of the season that didn ’ t let them hit a full stride early but rather learn on the fly .
“ It was kind of like last year . We had some unforeseen injuries that derailed us for a short bit and knocked us off track . I think we got back on the horse , but losing your quarterback is difficult , especially in 3A ,” New Waverly head coach Dean Schaub said . “ Devon stepped in and did some good things . I thought we fought through adversity but injuries are difficult to prevent .”
Two injuries stood out the most for this Bulldog squad . Those being quarterback Cade Garrett and running back Hunter Henry . The Dogs were down their top two players of offense and needed somebody to step up .
New Waverly got that with senior Dillon Thomas as a running back . They also got that from a collection of backs
