New Year, New Looks

51st Annual
Soon enough, the weather will start to turn into fall, and it will feel like football season, but for now, we must enjoy the sport in the heat.
The expectations are high in Walker County as the two teams that reside in Huntsville have big shoes to fill from the expectations set last year.

Huntsville saw a lot of turnover on the coaching side of things, but on the field, the Hornets have a wealth of talent that has Colton Foster the potential to make another run like they did in 2023, when they went four rounds deep. But the season is going to ride on sophomore quarterback Zay Adolphe, who brings a dynamic skill set to this squad. The Hornets have an opportunity to bring a strong offense with Adolphe, Trae’ Shawn Brown, Markcus Lewis and Jerious Singletary as focal points.

With a new offensive coordinator who seems to play to the strengths of the offense, the possibilities are endless.
The Hornet defense saw some holes get left, but it will bring back enough playmakers to be able to fill what is left. Trae Scott III, Brent Carroll and Isaiah Lewis all return with experience from the last two years.
Carroll and Scott III led the secondary and are once again projected to be over the top and trying to keep opponents at bay.
Sam Houston’ s questions provide few answers until they hit the field for the first time this season. The Kats haven’ t announced a starting quarterback or any starters to this point.
The Bearkats set an expectation to continue their winning ways, but with all the turnover, it could be interesting to see it come together under Phil Longo.
Alpha Omega Academy returns with a chip on its shoulder after losing the state championship game via a mercy rule.
The Lions return nearly every offensive starter from the run, and a bulk come back as juniors to help keep this team rolling for another couple years, with Case Collum and Hudson Ramey being two elite guys for this team.
New Waverly continues to develop and turnover a young roster that will try and build off back-to-back 4-7 seasons.
While the Bulldogs are in a tough district, they have multiple winnable games, so as long as the new offense can score points, New Waverly will need to win its 50 / 50 games to get back into the postseason.
More on each team will be included in their respective sections, but thank you for reading, and I look forward to bringing you the content from this football season on itemonline. com.
