development. I’ ve seen a different level of maturity, but he is approaching things differently than last year.”
Collum will play a key part in this team, but the guys around him will add to this team. One specifically is Ramey.
Ramey enters his junior season wearing multiple hats and will likely add more this season. As a receiver, he hauled in 41 passes for a total of 664 yards. And 24 % of his catches resulted in touchdowns for the Lions. Not to mention him adding 106 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.
“ Anything that Hudson does, he is the centerpiece,” Norris said.“ You don’ t see guys like that often who can pick up any ball or club and have success. He’ s a blessing to have. It gives us a level of versatility with his size, speed and skill.”
With all the athleticism Ramey brings, he is paired with Sikes and Isaac Thompson to create another explosive offense. Sikes hauled in 48 receptions last year and led the team with 906 yards through the air. He also had 16 touchdowns.
Thompson is another do-it-all player for the Lions last year and will have to stand up to the challenge of being the No. 1 running back this season.
Even with a few questions, this offense still has to capability to be one of the best in TAPPS.
“ Thompson is another guy who can play all over. We have several guys we can put all over the field and create matchup problems. I think he is a good football player, and he hasn’ t tapped into what he can do. Historically, a third of the time he touches the ball, he scores a touchdown. He’ s just a playmaker.”
With a strong offense comes a multitude of questions on the defense for this squad, though. The Lions have two returners who played a lot of reps between Ramey and Tristin Webb. Ramey led the team in tackles and tallied nine interceptions.
Webb was key on the defensive line with 12 sacks and 41 hurries.
But that is where the line stops, as the rest of the defense will have to be selected from a group of guys who were role players last year.
Cameron Steely will have to step up, along with, but outside of that, the Lions will need a new face.
“ If there was any concern, I would say the linebacker unit. I wanna see who can step in there. Will it be Cameron Steely, Carson Davis or Austin McCaffety? We have a bunch of guys who look like they can play it, but getting the right guys who have the chemistry. We have a great defensive line and a great secondary, which will be key. Coach Barnes does an awesome job with the defense.”
Alpha Omega Academy will start its season at 7:30 p. m. Aug. 28 at Allen Academy.
