Cannero , with its winding cobbled streets , enchanting lake views and backdrop of wooded mountains , is undoubtedly one of the most unspoilt and tranquil spots on Lake Maggiore . The hotel is fortuitously situated at one end of the promenade that separates it from the lake , next to a charming miniature harbour . Signora Gallinotto and her family , who run the hotel , are excellent hosts and the atmosphere is relaxed and congenial . A pretty courtyard and an ancient well serve as vestiges of the 17th Century monastery that once stood on this site , but most of the original building has been restructured to make the most of its lakeside position . Public rooms have large picture windows and bedrooms are light and airy , many with beamed ceilings and balconies overlooking the serene lake , while rooms to the rear of the hotel enjoy a view of the quiet pool area . There is also a rooftop terrace for sunbathing . Marvellous regional and international meals are served in the restaurant , I Castelli , and from its delightful terraces one can see the two tiny islands after which it is named . Before dining , you can visit the ancient monastery ' s wine cellar to choose your preferred wine .
