SUMMER 2019 I talian A merican D igest PAGE 13 Italian Americans Come Together for Springtime in New Orleans Italian Americans in New Orleans had a jampacked spring season filled with events that ranged from the exciting to the somber. After Mardi Gras, the city celebrated St. Joseph’s Day, which Italian Americans spent attending parades and St. Joseph’s Altars at churches, schools, and family homes across the region. The Sansepolcro Flag Throwers also visited and helped the AICC present the World Premiere of The Monumental Journey. Finally, in April, Right: Mayor LaToya Cantrell delivers apology Mayor LaToya Cantrell delivered an apology on on behalf of the city of New behalf of the city of New Orleans regarding the Orleans for the mass lynching of 11 Italians in 1891 mass lynching of 11 Italians in the city. The 1891 - event was attended by family members of the April 12th, 2019 victims and represented a symbolic move forward from that part of New Orleans’ history.
