Art Focus: A Healing Process Bernice Yu believes her artwork is closely related to her emotions and can serve as an effective healing process. Here, she explains more. 2. . 3. . 1. When I first started to experiment with drawing sunflowers I found that it made me feel peaceful and it seemed to absorb all my negative thoughts. I chose the black and white colour tone for my artwork as I thought it was important for the audience to think about the colour themselves as everyone sees differently depending on how they are feeling. With the images featured in this article, I will explain why I draw in different situations. 1. Drawing at school and university At times, I would worry about my homework or my grades which caused a lot of stress. Even though I carried on drawing throughout those times, it didn't seem to make my anxiety any better. However, after a month or so, I found this picture again and examined the light that I used in the process. For me, the grey tones in this picture represents light and hope in darker times. 2. Drawing on an aeroplane When I was flying to Taiwan one time I was feeling extremely nervous so to help calm my nerves I started to draw. In the process I forgot about the aeroplane and escaped into my own world. On the way back I also began to draw in circular motions to help represent the memories I had made on the trip. 3. Drawing on the MTR I never have any energy in the mornings due to lack of sleep. Therefore, I always try and draw to cheer myself up and get the day off to a good start. I usually draw lots of small patterns as this helps me to relax and the repetition helps me to release negative emotions. ISSUE 04: MARCH 2016 4. . 4. Drawing at home My home environment can feel chaotic and noisy at times so as a form of escapism I would always try and find a peaceful place. However, as my drawing has progressed I prefer to stay at home and can now find peace through my drawings which tend to spread a happy, comforting message. Bernice Yu is studying Visual Arts at HKIEd. She enjoys drawing and reading in her spare time. 09
