STUDENT REVIEWER
INTERVIEW
AN INTERVIEW
WITH LILY CHAN
Lily Chan is studying Global and Environmental
Scince (GES) and is in her second year. In her spare
time she likes reading books, playing piano,
watching movies and travelling around.
1. What was your experience of writing a review?
This has been a great chance for me to learn English.
My listening skills are my biggest weakness and for
that reason I didn’t used to like watching English
films and TV shows because I thought that they were
hard to understand and boring. However, this
experience has opened up a whole new world to me.
I now find that English films and TV shows are
sometimes more interesting than Chinese ones as
they send out messages in a very thoughtful way, for
example, “The Little Prince” and “Inside Out”. When
enjoying movies, I can completely immerse myself in
English which is great for improving my listening
skills.
2. Did you find that writing these reviews helped
you to improve your English?
Yes, watching TV shows is a really great way to learn
English. As well as the vocabulary, we can also learn
the intonations and pronunciation of words directly.
The tutors have also arranged several workshops and
presentation sessions for us on how to write a good
review which has been really beneficial.
3. Why do you think reviews are beneficial?
As they are written by the students, I think it makes
them easier to understand and they are more
persuasive.

4. Why did you choose the films/TV shows that
you did?
I chose animation films for my reviews as I find them
both visually stunning and educational which can
create more meaning. For example, “Toy Story” and
“Ding Dong” talk about friendships and what it
means to grow up.
4. What is your favourite TV show or film?
My favourite film is “Inside Out”. It tells the story in its
own unique way and is full of surprises as it forces us
to look at our emotions from a different angle. The
animation takes place in San Francisco and is about
a little girl experiencing five emotions, joy, sadness,
anger, fear and disgust. We often think that sadness
is a bad thing, however, this film sends the message
that “It is okay to not be okay” which is a great
reminder for everyone
5. Would you recommend other students to use
the TV/film facilities in the ASLLC, and why?
Yes, I would. They provide us with a great source of
learning materials. For example, the TV rooms and
DVDs are available for all the students to use. The
environment means that films and TV shows can be
enjoyed in your spare time.
