Book Review: My Top 3 Picks It's halfway through the second semester and everyone is feeling the pressure. However, Ella May Ho believes that there’s always time for a good book. Here are her top 3 picks. Image via en.wikipedia.org Image via en.wikipedia.org Image via housingworks.org 1. City of Bones; Author: Cassandra Clare; Genre: Fantasy Amid the constant murders in New York City and an unexpected meeting with the gorgeous, witty Jace Wayland, fifteen year old Clary Fray discovers a shocking secret—that she too is a Shadowhunter who needs to protect the world from demons. This is definitely an excellent choice if you’re into fantasy, magical creatures and action. Personally, I think Clare is one of the most imaginative and exciting writers in the fantasy genre. Also, the TV adaptation has just aired! 2. The Book Thief; Author: Markus Zusak; Genre: Historical Fiction Image via confessionsofabookgeek.com What makes Chbosky’s novel powerful is that it not only helps you understand how an innocent teenager or an introvert may feel, but it also allows you to reflect on innocence and life itself. Set during World War II, Zusak tells the story of a young foster child named Liesel Meminger who is consumed by her love for books. This is then reflected in her growing friendship with one companion in particular. I think this is an absolutely breathtaking novel that highlights the power of books and how it can change one’s perspective on things. Zusak’s novel and fantastic writing will definitely keep you on your toes. 3. The Perks of Being a Wallflower; Author: Stephen Chbosky; Genre: Realistic Fiction This coming-of-age novel depicts the journey of a very introverted teenager in high school. The narrator, Charlie, describes his new experiences in a series of letters—particularly his feelings and his shocking discoveries about friends, sex and drugs as he goes through a new stage of adolescence.
