Never Give Up
An article by : LO , Shi - yu , Caleb Augustine
Prince, a young man whose admission to join the university of his dreams, was
denied, lays down on the couch all day feeling resentful and hopeless. His friend, John,
came visiting to cheer him up but he insisted that he wanted to be alone. John stayed a
little bit longer, and when it was clear that Prince did not need his company, he dragged
his feet slowly towards the front door and left.
Hours passed, and Prince maintained his position and feelings. Fortunately, and
unfortunately, his solitude was interrupted by a poor mouse that fell from the ceiling
and landed on the floor, hurting one of its forelegs. He looked at it with mixed feelings,
not knowing what action to take. The mouse squeaked in pain for a short while then saw
a piece of meat lying on the floor, towards which it hurriedly leapt. Prince moved his
head to maintain a good view of the mouse which noticed his movements and hid under
the carpet for a minute, then, moved towards the piece of meat once again.
The boy chased it intentionally, and the hide-and-seek game continued for some
time. Later, the boy realised that the piece of meat went missing, and the mouse never
showed up again. Wowed by the fact that a mouse had made him forget his bad mood,
he sat on the couch and realised how stupid he was to give up as opposed to the mouse
who fell, hurt its leg, was chased away from the piece of meat, and yet, never gave up.
His mood changed, and with a glance of hope, he reapplied for admission, and his
request granted.
