Overcoming
The Fear Of Death
An article by : LUK , Holan
Sometimes, I deeply feel that death is so
close to us. Despite the strength of a nation, the
greatness of a man or the richness of another,
it is always the same fate in the end, without
exceptions. Am I panicking? Yes! It seems
insurmountable because death is always there.
However, because of its inevitability, one
should not fear it since, in the eyes of Kagan
(2012, p.291), ‘……such a fear does not make any
sense and it is not an appropriate reaction.’
‘Just as Man is destined to die once, and after
that to face judgment.’ Hebrews 9:27
Nevertheless, I believe that, instead of focusing
on death itself, it is better to plan my life and
find my purpose before death.

So when the judgment day comes, perhaps I
will not regret my life and my work.
After receiving an invitation from Anabuki
College in October, I had the opportunity to
visit the Elders Home and Career Training
School of the Anabuki Group in Takamatsu,
Japan. It was kind of a positive feeling when I
discovered the elders’ eagerness and joy when
participating in their daily activities, and their
attentive care and interactions with the student
volunteers.
As an educator, I constantly reflect on my
mission of living up to my values and helping
others live up to theirs. I was impressed by a
group of young students who were willing to
choose this caregiving career and devote their
time and effort to assist the elders. I felt that I
could also inspire younger generations to care
of people in need, especially the elders in our
society.
