INSPIRATIONAL TALES However, as we get older, we are taught things like ‘you can’t do that’ or ‘you’re not allowed to say things like that’ or even ‘you need to do better.’ So of course, we learn to be afraid of taking chances... afraid of failing... and instead we play it safe. One of the things that I had to learn when I studied improv, and one of the Think of the last time you made a presentation to your class or at work. Or when you met new people for the first time. How did you feel? Did you think things like ‘I hope I don’t screw this up’ or ‘What if these people don’t like me?’ Almost all of us go through this in these situations. As young children, we don’t have first things I teach my students, is that it is ok to fail. In fact, failing can be a good thing. It allows for growth. When we fail, we learn from that experience and become better. If you do the same thing over and over and never take risks, how are you going to grow? You’re just going to remain static. these fears... we are too busy exploring new things to be afraid. Every experience as a child is new to us and our young minds are eager to learn more and to grow. There’s no ‘filter’ in our young minds, so we are open to new experiences and say whatever is on our minds, no matter how inappropriate. We start out life as natural improvisers!
