LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Passing Milestones

Idon ’ t know about you , but no one ever told me how hard being an entrepreneur and business owner would be . We ’ ve all seen the ads about “ Be your own boss , set your own hours , work where you want with the clients you like , and have a hot tub .” Sounds great , right ? But reality doesn ’ t always live up to the hype . The hours are often long , and it means being away from family , the clients can be less than ideal , and that hot tub sits empty most of the time .

So why do we do it ? Is there a key trait of business owners that can keep their companies surviving and thriving for 10 , 15 , 25 years and more ? Celebrating my 25th anniversary as the CEO and Founder of Quick Compute this month led me to reflect on these very questions .
Mike Rowe , whom I have had the pleasure to meet and hear speak in person , embodies what I think it takes to be successful in business . It ’ s all about hard work , persistence , seizing opportunities , humility , and dedication to what has become your life ’ s work , even if it wasn ’ t what you started out to do . It also means thinking beyond yourself and your immediate gratification and defining your measure of success beyond just money .
These characteristics of successful businesses also apply to charitable organizations such as the Children ’ s Advocacy Center of Hidalgo and Star Counties . Working with children who have suffered heartbreaking treatment at the hands of others to restore them to a measure of a protected childhood existence requires hard work , personal dedication , and perseverance of the entire staff . Our society ’ s children are our most significant and most precious resource . Not many can do this unique organization ’ s work to advocate for these children .
Quick Compute has been privileged to be a part of their journey , providing the technology guidance and assistance needed to sustain their growth and to be recognized among the 70 Children ’ s Advocacy groups across the state of Texas as a flagship organization leading the way through technology to serve better those children who need all our help . Their story appears on page 8 , and is definitely worth reading .
It isn ’ t apparent to the outsider looking at Quick Compute of any direct effect we have on our society ’ s children . Still , the Children ’ s Advocacy Center of Hidalgo and Star Counties has been a 20 + year personal sponsorship that supports the most vulnerable of our child population through our monetary support and as Technology consultants , HIPAA Certified experts , Cybersecurity experts , and genuine friends .
Check out page 15 of this edition for more in-depth details about some of the technology that is currently being employed by most of our clients to provide a solid foundation for growth and success .
For more information about Mike Rowe ’ s career , his book , The Way I Heard It , is as inspiring as it is entertaining .
It is my sincerest hope that you will find inspiration , as I have , from the individuals who have graciously contributed to this second edition of the IT For The Future Of Texas Business .
