8000 £. We made a pair that was identical in every
way - same colour, same everything. We charged our
client 1600 £. So, let’s be honest, we are making a
mark up, as well.
Q9. What is the most unique item that someone
has requested from you and what did you use to
make it?
SM: A client asked me to make a matching set of
pink colour diamonds earrings of 5 carats each,
heart shape. She said she had been quoted $2M USD,
but I said, “Don’t worry, we can do better.” They’re
incredibly rare, these stones. But, we managed to get
one pair from the face of the earth that were available
with that criteria. The problem is with pink diamonds
of that size that to get them in a heart shape, you have
to cut them in that way, and so the pink diamond has
to be twice the size to begin with, and you’re at the
risk of cracking it. If you split it down the middle, you
can potentially loose a 8 or 9 carat pink stone. So, the
whole business of cutting pink diamonds or stones,
you are running at a high risk.
Q10. Do you get your pink diamonds from
Argyle?
ND: Well, we own Argyle diamonds. Argyle has never
produced anything of that size. We do have a 0.78 a
tenth of that size, we’ve got a 1.01, a tenth of that size,
and we have a couple of yellows and red available.
Bare in mind that there are only 30 red diamonds
on the planet. Also, do you realise that Rio Tinto is
closing the mine down and they source 90% of the
world’s pink diamonds. The Argyle brand is owned by
Rio Tinto who manufacture the stones. But, they’re
the only manufacturer. You and I can hold every
Argyle pink diamond mined since 1986 in our hands.
SM: They’re an effective store of wealth with the mines
shutting down next year, and in terms of investment
with buying an Argyle pink diamond. It’s pretty safe,
I would say. Given that ultimately, in my mind, you
know that tanzanite will get mined out. Tanzanite is
like they’re not going to grow like leaves on trees. So
alternatively, the Argyle pink is a good investment.
ND: We have set up a little sideline within our
business for a store of wealth for the stones we own,
and can source at the mine.
Q11. Why choose Eden Rocks in comparison to
any other jeweller in London or the world?
SM: Its more fun, and you can meet us! We can take
care of you on a personal level, which I don’t believe
is necessarily the case with other brands. I think
big brands will put themselves first. We like to be
authentic, given that we are a new company at this
stage. We will take you on a journey that is really
personable and very different compared to anything
else or any high street.
