Sustainability Advisory Board and George Clooney
The creation of the Sustainability Advisory Board arrives at a critical period for AAA, as Nespresso
wishes to expand the program to Kenya and Ethiopia, and rebuild coffee growing in South Sudan.
The initiative covers collaboration with the local non-profit organisation such as TechnoServe and
local governments as well as community development programs.
Founding on its success with AAA in the Latin America region, Nespresso also considers
extending AAA to serve more smallholder farms in Kenya and Ethiopia. Their goal is to double the
supply of coffee from the country by 2020. According to the company, it presently has 56,000
farms registered in the program and gets at least 80% of its coffee from such farms.
The role of Clooney is anticipated to concentrate on the South Sudan project along with
TechnoServe. The institution has a strong track accomplishment in local agricultural development,
which includes coffee farming.
As for the record of accomplishment of Mr. Clooney, he appeared in a cover for Vanity Fair in
2006. He promoted the oil-themed movie Syriana. It includes collaboration with the Natural
Resources Defence Council and the Sierra Club, which launched the Oil Change movement. In a
figurative tie-in, Clooney turned out to be an early EV adopter with the purchase of Tango, later on
upgrading to Tesla Roadster EV.
Fascinatingly, in a 2011 profile, he noted a conflict among his environmental issues and his use of
private jets. That might soon turn into a doubtful point as renewable jet biofuel comes into full use.
However, the problem reverberates that firms such as Nespresso and Green Mountain find
themselves in.
