We proposed the deconstruction of the conventional
central building, in four autonomous buildings
which are nested around a traditional square.
This way we created the sense of the island’s traditional
square in proportion to human scale.
The roofs of these four buildings were constructed
with a modern version of the traditional way of
covering the terrace of the islands’ houses.
The element that unifies all the complex is the
coarse coating, a living technique still in use in the
island of Leros. We brought a specialized craftsman
from this island to educate and guide our
staff in order to achieve the proper effect.
The materials are simple. Local stone, using the
traditional dry stone technique, wood, cement
mortars.
