introduce identified talent to strength and conditioning training . Girls start training with the Ladies ’ team from the age of 16 , and compete against their peers in contact situations until they are eligible to play adult rugby .
Colts will generally move on to play for the St Jacques Vikings , Guernsey ’ s other rugby team , as a stepping stone to the Raiders . By the time boys and girls are ready to play adult rugby , they know the systems and the players and we believe this integrated approach is pivotal to the future of rugby in Guernsey . Of course , we are hampered as many young players leave the island to pursue a tertiary education elsewhere , but that is just a fact of life for all island sports , and is not isolated to rugby .
HOW DO YOU COPE WITH THE EXTENSIVE TRAVEL THE TEAMS HAVE TO UNDERTAKE ? As a Raiders player , you become accustomed to long days for away fixtures , and sometimes overnight stays . A day trip can consist of being at the airport at 6am ( so a 5am alarm !) and landing back at 9pm , so of course this can be taxing . However , it is just part and parcel for us . Of course , it is also a huge financial burden – this season , we have 22 away matches between our senior squads

Ladies Rugby huddle
Without the support of our sponsors , and a successful application to the RFU ’ s Needs Based Travel Fund , we would find it extremely difficult to finance these matches .

Colin Murdoch is a supporter and sponsor of Guernsey Rugby Club and as a Director of Rossborough Insurance , he recently spoke to Rugby Club Magazine about his long and positive association with rugby on the island Guernsey and beyond ,
“ I moved to Guernsey 42 years ago from my hometown of Forfar which is located in Angus , Scotland . Being a rugby player and fan , previously playing for Strathmore RFC back home , I was keen to keep connected and so went along to St Jacques RFC , another very historic local

club which recently became a part of Guernsey RFC .
Myself along with some friends at St Jacques and Guernsey Rugby Club helped start the Wooden Spoon Society on Guernsey , some 20 or so years ago , which is still going strong today and something we are very proud of . My son Callum played for Guernsey from ages 11-30 , an excellent prop forward he was a product of the clubs great academy set up .
The service provided by the club to our local community is quite exceptional and inspiring . From the tots , to colts , ladies ’ rugby and our 1st XV there is a place for everyone and of course the social side of the club is second to none . Myself and all our staff at Rossborough Insurance ( A Gallaghers Company ) would like to congratulate everyone at the Guernsey Rugby Club on being recognised for the outstanding contribution to rugby and of course to our new president this season Andrea Harris ; wishing you all the very best of success and friendship for many more years to come !”
