Uganda ’ s modernity and village cities

Refer to : “ Uganda ’ s pursuit of modernity : Why every modern asset should be respected for its functionality and not merely its symbolism ” ( The Independent May 05 ). We should be brave and admit the fact that Kampala and most of our cities are village towns . Application of any urban touches requires sophistication that can only be achieved by planners that have had lengthy exposure to basic urban facilities . I think it is only Jinja , Mbale and Gulu towns that can respond to modernity if the economy was following a development trajectory . Godfrey Kambere

Dangerous antibiotic use in Uganda

Refer to : “ Dangerous antibiotic use in Uganda : Action is needed to stop most powerful treatments in modern medicine from becoming ineffective ” ( The Independent May 15 ). This is a great detailed writing that calls for self-reflection : How we move in circles ? In the beginning of a career , we had prescription of antibiotic being supervised by seniors , they were available and took prompt action , and they were trying to protect dear Ampicillin and her cousin Septrin and restricting use of chloramphenicol .
On admission , we took samples to the laboratory and by the ward round next day results were available to guide subsequent treatment . In control of my memory today , I do not recall prescribing drugs for patient to purchase . The drugs were only accessible to

Dr . Musenero ’ s missing vaccine money

Refer to : “ Dr . Musenero : No money was sent directly to PRESIDE ” ( The Independent Online May 18 ). I watched the UBC programme and wish to register my disappointment : The question is was there value for money ? Did the committee read the research proposal ( s )? If one has to determine best component of Virus ( x ) that provokes best quality response ( y ) in an animal ( requires permission ) then determine if product ( y ) recognises virus move to stage of testing the x in a few people ( requires permission and review process ) and finally to a larger group ( requires permission and review process ). Which of these is an indicator of value for money ?
An experiment is a process just like you plant beans in a new piece of land : They may not germinate , may not do well , the yield may not be as good as you expected . When the final outcome is good one proceeds but when poor the process is repeated . Requirements present : Process established , experimental results available , lessons learnt , new questions generated , Individuals trained , reputation built . The assessment of value for money may have to come from elsewhere . Let us chill for the time being . Fifi registered practitioner in private practice .
One of the actions for mitigation should be a review of what has changed . When it comes to recommendations , are out laboratories implementing activity as planned by the region ? How does Uganda compare at the level of investigation of infections ?

Dr . Musenero : Where is money for COVID workers ?

Refer to : “ Dr . Musenero : No money was sent directly to PRESIDE ” ( The Independent Online May 18 ). Also investigate the whereabouts of the money for the people who participated during the COVID vaccination exercise . Up to date no payment has been made and nobody has come out to give reasons why . Concerned citizen in Budaka District . Michael Mwayi
