On biculturalism also recognising multiculturalism, Rangima said:

“Our Learning & Teaching plan is not only bicultural in its approach, but also multicultural and that’s what we need. It is also about ensuring we appreciate other students from international countries to bring along their own culture and share it in the group, like a big family.  This coalesces with Māori culture, where for example whanaungatanga is all about encompassing everyone and giving them a sense of belonging.”

On creating a balance for all:

“For us this plan is more than a document, it’s our roadmap that can show us how to be successful and not just us, but others also.  The bicultural aspect first and foremost it is going to open up the way for both Māori and Pakeha, because it presents a balance for both and that is something we find difficult ourselves – where do I belong? For me I am of both Māori and Pakeha descent, but I identify mostly with my Māori side. This has always created a struggle for me to find the balance between the two.

On recognising all cultures as key:

“So, I believe that for UC International College to embrace indigenous cultural principles is a big step for international education – our vision is not only recognising Māori but all indigenous cultures.

We know this journey will not always be easy and it will require time, as well as respecting and honouring each other. Demonstrating this is the real meaning behind what we are doing. Often Māori principles and practices are included in a tokenistic way, but it needs to be much deeper than that. It is about teaching with kindness, teaching with care and explaining what these concepts mean and I believe this plan does this in a holistic way. As a living document, it means that everyone can take a piece of it as their own, so it’s not just about embracing cultural elements, but the principles and values that are embedded within it as well.”
