Build the workforce your business needs for the future
Businesses across Staffordshire are facing a common challenge of attracting, developing and retaining a skilled workforce needed for long term success. At a time when skills shortages continue to impact growth across many sectors, apprenticeships offer a practical and cost-effective solution that benefits both employers and employees.
Businesses that thrive in the years ahead will be those that invest in skills today. Apprenticeships provide a practical and proven way to develop talent, address skills shortages, and build a workforce that is ready for future challenges. Apprenticeships are not just for new recruits; they can support employees at every stage of their career.
Apprenticeships can also be used to upskill existing employees, helping businesses respond to changing industry demands, adopt new technologies, and develop future managers and leaders. This also helps businesses strengthen capability, improve productivity, and plan confidently for growth.
Why apprenticeships make business sense
Apprenticeships provide employers with an opportunity to develop skills that are directly aligned to business needs. Unlike off-the-shelf training programmes, apprenticeship learning is tailored to the workplace, ensuring knowledge and skills gained can be applied immediately.
Apprenticeships deliver tangible business benefits. Employers frequently report improvements in productivity and performance, alongside stronger staff retention as employees value the investment made in their development. Apprenticeships also support succession planning by helping businesses nurture future leaders from within, reducing reliance on external recruitment and creating a stronger, more resilient workforce.
Government funding already makes apprenticeships one of the most accessible and cost-effective forms of workforce development. For many employers, training costs are heavily subsidised, and from October 2026 additional recruitment incentives will provide further support for businesses investing in young talent.
New incentives for employers
From October 2026, additional financial incentives will be available to encourage businesses to invest in young people. Employers will be eligible for a £ 1,000 incentive when recruiting an apprentice aged 16 to 18, or an apprentice aged 19 to 25 with an Education, Health and Care Plan( EHCP).
Non-levy paying employers can receive up to £ 2,000 when hiring a new apprentice aged 16 to 24 when hired within 3 months of their apprenticeship start date. Employers can also access enhanced support in specific circumstances, including incentives of up to £ 3,000 for eligible young people who have been in receipt of Universal Credit.
These incentives have been introduced to encourage more apprenticeship opportunities for young people while helping employers address workforce shortages and invest in the next generation of talent. When combined with existing funding support, they make apprenticeships an even more attractive proposition for ambitious businesses looking to grow.
