Entries open for conductors ' contest

Those skilled with the baton are being invited to get involved in the International Conductors ’ Contest , with registration now open .
The prestigious event runs from July 13-20 , 2022 , and will take place during the World Music Contest in Kerkrade , in the Netherlands .
Out of the registrations , 24 candidates will be selected for the contest . The winner of the golden baton will be decided during the final concert on Wednesday , July 20 , 2022 , where three finalists will conduct the gala concert in the Roda Hall .
Björn Bus , general artistic manager at WMC , commented : “ During the World Music Contest , we are continuing this longstanding tradition . During previous WMC editions the conductors ’ course and contest were integrated . We have decided to organise the contest separately from the course again , to split the educational part from the competitive component .”

New faces at Strata Brass

Conductors are invited to submit their entries for the International Conductors ' Contest .
During the 19th edition of the festival , WMC will be collaborating with the Association of Conductors and Instructors ( BvOI ) to organise the International Conductors ’ Contest .
The participants will have the possibility to work with the Helicon Wind Ensemble ( NL ), the Royal Symphonic Band of the Belgian Air Force ( BE ) and the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy ( NL ).

Participants can upload all required information . Registration closes on March 1 , 2022 .
On April 1 , participants will be informed about their admission into the contest .
A recent concert from Strata Brass featured some fresh faces sitting in the band ’ s line-up .
Already well-known to followers of the band is cornet player Rhys Stokes , who joined the band on third cornet back in 2019 and having impressed the band with his hard work , recently moved up to the solo cornet bench , making his first official appearances there in the concert as well as the recent Bolsover and Wychavon contests .
Rhys Stokes , Jacob Waller , Davey Webster and Skye Stokes are impressing with Strata Brass .
During recent months , a trio of youngsters have boosted the band , as well as pulling down the average age .
Joining on second cornet is Jacob Waller , who came up through the ranks of the Barnsley Music Service ensembles , playing cornet in Barnsley Junior and Intermediate Bands before joining the senior ensembles Barnsley Metropolitan Band and Barnsley Town Concert Band .
Jacob also plays in the trumpet line for funk band Civic Fusion and his school awarded him
Musician of the Year in 2017 .
Completing the band ’ s middle row is Davey Webster . Davey is another graduate of the Barnsley Music Service and also joins from Barnsley Metropolitan .
Tutored by Michael Dodd , Davey is a member of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain and passed his grade eight euphonium with distinction in 2020 .
Taking the crown of youngest player in the band from her older brother Rhys , Skye Stokes joins her dad Nick in the trombone section .
Another product of Barnsley Music Service , Skye plays trombone with Barnsley Town Concert Band , Civic Fusion and the Sheffield Senior Schools Orchestra .
She is also an accomplished baritone player , playing first baritone for Foden ’ s and Elland Youth Bands , as well as being appointed principal baritone of the National Children ’ s Band of Great Britain in 2020 and 2021 .
