Following the seemingly endless stream of cancellations and postponements , the past few weeks have seen a raft of live brass band performances taking place in the UK and beyond . From major national championships to local concerts , the sound of brass has been ringing out once again . This weekend , the spotlight falls on Gateshead , by the banks of the River Tyne , and the Brass in Concert Festival . It may have been condensed into a one-day format this year , but after the dearth of live music during much of the pandemic , fans of the event will be sorely looking forward to taking their seats in Sage Gateshead for a busy day of action ; keep in touch with it all at www . britishbandsman . com .
Meanwhile , composer Edward Gregson has spoken of his anger after rogue recordings surfaced online from the Netherlands Brass Band Championships , featuring his set work The World Rejoicing . Edward was understandably disappointed at the airing of the recordings , which undermine the element of surprise , especially for a work which is due to receive ' premieres ' at several countries ' major contests over the coming months . In addition to the artistic concerns , there are also major copyright issues , with enthusiastic but blissfully ignorant audience members snaffling shaky mobile phone recordings which are promptly uploaded to the internet . It doesn ' t make for a particularly enjoyable listening or viewing experience yet it harms those striving to bring the art to the stage - and into people ' s homes . Venues must do more to curb this disturbing trend .
Have a good week .
