4. Make Sure They Have Testimonials
They should have some social proof on their website or promotional materials. If they do not, make sure you ask them whom they’ ve worked for in the past.
If you’ re hiring someone for a very big launch or are considering hiring them full-time, I would ask them for references. And make sure you contact them.
A word about testimonials: it helps if they have specific testimonials- however, I would not put a lot of credence into them. There are a lot of copywriters out there who make bold claims such as“ My Copy Converted At 45 Percent!” on their sites. Yet you don’ t know the specifics of that promotion... such as the traffic, offer, price point, and other factors that affect conversion rates.
While some specific testimonials are important, a lot goes into the success of a promotion, and copy is only one cog in the wheel. Yes, it helps the copywriter had some results with their writing, but just because a certain copywriter made millions with one launch doesn’ t mean he can do it for yours. So don’ t be seduced by specific testimonials.
Where Do I Find A Copywriter?
This is a common question. I would stay away from“ for-hire” sites such as elance. com and scriptlance. com if you need a really big job done. This is the first place many people head to when they want to outsource copywriting, but the quality is hit-and-miss.
There are some copywriters who actively advertise using Google Adwords. Just type in“ copywriting” or“ copywriter” into a Google search and you’ ll see some copywriters’ ads pop up over and over again. I personally don’ t use Google Adwords( yet, that is... I may test it in the future) but if you notice the same writers over and over again they must be doing well to afford the cost of
Adwords these days.
Further, you can check out WarriorForum. com. There is a separate copywriting section where copywriters hang out and most of them are pretty good. This is a good place to go if you’ re looking for“ internet marketing” style copy. The prices and quality will vary here too.
The best place to find a copywriter is simple- ask around. Think of anyone you know who runs a business... both online or offline... and ask if they know or have worked with a good copywriter. If you ask enough people, you’ ll eventually find someone. It’ s best to work with a copywriter who is strongly recommended by a peer instead of trying to hunt one down yourself. You’ ll also save yourself a lot of time.
How Much Will I Have To Pay?
For a good sales letter or video sales letter expect to pay at least $ 2,500. I charge way more than that but for a copywriter who knows what they’ re doing and fulfills all the criteria above, this should be the minimum you’ ll have to pay when hiring a seasoned copywriter to write a sales letter.
Keep in mind this is a general guideline... as there are totally competent writers out there who charge way less than this. But in my opinion they are severely undervaluing their service.
One thing you should never do is come out and ask any copywriter:“ How much do you charge for a sales letter?” right off the bat. While cost is a valid concern if you have a low budget, it is impossible for the copywriter
