Engineering Practice apprenticeship opportunities now available at University of Sunderland

In 2016 , the University of Sunderland started its first degree apprenticeship . Since then , the university ’ s portfolio has vastly expanded . One of its most successful programmes is the BEng Engineering Practice degree apprenticeship , with electronic and electrical or manufacturing options available .

It is designed to build higher level engineering skills , support businesssustainable growth and build skills for the future . The programme supports innovation and creativity , while extending engineering knowledge which is key to driving development and change .
This apprenticeship allows apprentices to specialise in a subject area but uses common modules for cross fertilisation of ideas and approaches through different industry sectors .
The programme involves participation in active work-related projects and knowledge exchange which can help to improve business operational effectiveness . The projects undertaken include wider knowledge and exposure to concepts such as Industry 4.0 and lean methodologies .
The diverse range of engineering organisations working with the university provide great opportunities for apprentices to share ideas , develop new innovative concepts and think broadly about solutions to challenges .
Programme lead Michael Douglas says : “ The degree apprenticeship programme continues to grow by working with local industry and helps to develop employees into motivated , qualified and successful engineers .”

As part of the final work-based project module , apprentices are required to present their project to representatives from industry , full-time students and the university ’ s senior management team .
Michael says : “ We have had some outstanding final projects from apprentices employed in various manufacturing sectors from organisations such as Nissan , Komatsu , Caterpillar , Sterling Pharma , TT Electronics , BAE and Hitachi , that have made a real impact , producing quantifiable benefits to the organisation .”

This apprenticeship programme offers engineering and manufacturing employers a cost-effective solution to develop their workforce . For employees with extensive experience or a level 4 or 5-related qualification , such as a HNC or HND , there
is the opportunity to fast track and join the second or third year of the programme .
Businesses can benefit from funding to support apprenticeships . For levy-paying employers , it ’ s an opportunity to attract talent to your business , train existing staff and enjoy the ultimate return on investment from your levy payments . For smaller businesses , the government will fund up to 95 per cent of apprenticeship tuition fees .
Now is the time to invest in your workforce The next start date for this apprenticeship is October 2022 .
