SHOW OF SUPPORT FOR POW CAMPAIGN

More than 60 people , including many of the region ’ s female business leaders , pledged to support the Power of Women campaign at its inaugural “ vision ” event .

Held at the Curve at Teesside University , the event – hosted by POW engagement manager Rosalind Stuart – highlighted the campaign ’ s vision for 2022 and showcased the work that ’ s already been done with nine primary schools from across the region .
Businesswomen listened intently as primary school children described cartoons they had each created to represent their school , in an initiative sponsored by Teesport operators PD Ports .
Attendees also heard from POW marketing officer Nieve Morrison , who urged people to put forward a pledge to support the campaign – an appeal that saw several attendees respond with pledges to back the Power of Women .

The campaign , which is backed by the team behind Tees Business , aims to shift and lift the aspirations of girls and young women in the Tees region .
It aims to achieve this by collecting stories from successful women and featuring them on its website . This is to create role models from local women for the girls working with the campaign and show them they can achieve their dreams from within their home town .
And Amanda is a key example of just that . Her position as partner at BHP Law in Darlington , as well as being named Tees Valley BME Woman of the Year , makes her the perfect role model for young girls in the Tees region .
“ I found out that I was nominated for the Tees Valley BME Woman of the Year award ,” she said .
Primary school children played a big part in the official launch of the Power of Women campaign .

Jane Armitage , of Jacksons Law Firm , who is chair of the POW board of directors , said : “ It was wonderful to have the opportunity to showcase what POW has been working on and to outline our plans for the future – in person , at last !
“ The primary ambassadors were tremendous and massive advocates for all POW wants to achieve . We are very grateful for all the support from the business community and hope that following the launch , we will be able to work with all the people who expressed a desire to support POW .
“ We are open to any ideas and want to encourage the business community to support us by writing their stories for our website , becoming official supporters and sponsors and joining in our events .”
A POW festival will take place at Middlesbrough Town Hall on Friday June 24 , with details to be announced soon .

Lawyer Amanda Adeola has told her story on the new Power of Women website , which is supported by Tees Business .
“ I was honoured to have been shortlisted . To then win it was very significant for me .”
She also advised young females to “ be yourself , be committed to your goals , root for others because your time will come when others root for you .”
She added : “ Never envy the journey of others because you do not know what it took to get there , so focus on your journey .”

BORO CLIMB TABLE Middlesbrough leapt to joint-third place in the Financial Times ’ European Cities and Regions of the Future report , which ranks small cities with the best longterm investment potential .

AWARD FOR UNI BUILDING Teesside University has won Client of the Year at the national 2021 Constructing Excellence awards for its outstanding collaborative work on the Cornell Quarter student residential accommodation .
The university was recognised for the excellent facilities in the accommodation , as well as how well teams overcame challenges brought by the pandemic during construction .
GYM GROUP EXPANSION OneGym – which has fitness centres in Redcar , Thornaby and Stockton – has used a £ 300,000 investment from the North-East Growth Capital Fund , supported by the European Regional Development Fund via the Recovery Loan Scheme , to open a brand-new fitness facility at DurhamGate in Spennymoor .
It ’ s the sixth in the OneGym chain , sitting alongside branches in Newton Aycliffe and Bishop Auckland , as well as its three Tees sites .
BARCLAYS ’ BACKING Two senior executives from one of Britain ’ s biggest banks have said they will support the Tees region ’ s “ ambitious ” freeport after visiting the site .
Barclays Bank ’ s group chief executive , CS Venkatakrishnan , and its head of manufacturing , transport and logistics , Lee Collinson , added their support to the Teesside Freeport during a visit with Tees Valley mayor Ben Houchen .
