Bright ideas needed to tackle nuisance fires

SETTING OUR SIGHTS ON JOBS OF TOMORROW

MAJOR OFFSHORE WIND DEAL BRINGS 750 JOBS

At least 750 jobs are heading to

Teesside – and potentially 1,500 more in the supply chain – after details of a new multi-million-pound wind turbine blade manufacturing site were revealed .
Global offshore wind manufacturer GE Renewable Energy will build a new stateof-the-art facility on the banks of the River Tees .
The blades produced by GE Renewable Energy at the Teesworks site will be supplied to the Dogger Bank wind farm , around 80 miles off the coast .
When completed in 2026 , Dogger Bank will be the largest offshore wind farm in the UK and will be capable of powering up to six million homes .
Teesworks is being supported with £ 20m of government cash towards the build-out of the new heavy-lift quay being built on the site , with the expectation

Cleveland Fire Brigade has launched a campaign reminding people that firefighters cannot be in two places at once and nuisance fires divert resources away from other emergencies where lives may be at risk .

Eighty-five per cent of calls are to nuisance fires , often small issues such as rubbish or wheelie bin fires and improperly extinguished BBQs or cigarettes .
The brigade is asking businesses and the public to submit ideas to reduce nuisance fires to communications @ clevelandfire . gov . uk . All ideas received by Thursday April 8 will be considered and the best one will receive a special prize .
The brigade is asking everyone to take pride in their local community by making

that South Bank will house up to three manufacturers to support the development of the next generation of offshore wind projects .
The project will substantially boost the UK ’ s offshore wind manufacturing base and create thousands of local jobs .
The news came just days after the announcement in the Budget that Teesside would become the UK ’ s largest freeport following a successful bid led by Tees Valley mayor Ben Houchen – a condition that was the deciding factor for GE Renewable Energy .
Mayor Houchen said : “ This monumental deal reached with GE Renewable Energy to bring their multimillion-pound manufacturing facility to Teesside and create more than 2,000 local jobs is a major step forward for my plan to bring skilled good-quality jobs to local people .”

their neighbourhoods safer and cleaner .
Both individuals and businesses can help by considering the following around their premises :
Put bins out only on the day of collection and bring them in as soon as possible afterwards .
Store bins and refuse securely and away from your property .
Clear rubbish and cut back boundaries on to public footpaths to aid visibility .
Dispose of bulky items via a registered service – check at gov . uk / environmentagency
Report issues such as fly-tipping to fixmystreet . com or your local council . Report incidents anonymously to

It has long been recognised that the jobs we do today won ’ t be the jobs that we need tomorrow . There is much discussion about what those future jobs will be .

With the recent announcement of GE Renewable Energy coming to the Teesworks site , the freeport , the commitment to a greener economy , including offshore wind and hydrogen , announcements on waste-to-energy plants and the work Teesside University is doing with TWI to support a new National Hydrogen Transport Centre , demand for a skilled workforce is clear .
Seeing the investments come to Teesside , it is essential colleges and training providers are preparing people for when those jobs become available . Skills must be built in tandem with the construction of these developments , so the workforce is ready when they are needed .
At Redcar and Cleveland College we have been futureproofing our curriculum to meet those needs . We have shared news of investment in our engineering facilities and we continue to invest in electrical training equipment , industrial training , solar and wind training equipment , all supporting our ambition to create a centre for energy that will link in with the opportunities on their way .
We must ensure young people are educated in what those jobs are , with careers advisors , schools and colleges , working alongside companies such as GE and others situated at the Teesworks site , to share their knowledge and vision . The sooner we know what the future jobs are , the sooner people can be equipped with the skills needed .
