REDCAR & CLEVELAND NEWS LOFTY HIGH STREET AMBITIONS REVEALED Redcar and Cleveland Council has unveiled its vision for Loftus high street as part of a multi-million-pound bid for the government’s Future High Streets Fund. Proposed designs and a fly-through video show the exciting plans to create a new market square to hold year-round events, as well as delivering more business space and homes, more and better car parking, and a modern facility for the relocation of Loftus Library. Loftus is one of 100 towns to progress to the second phase of the government’s Future High Streets Fund, which is aimed at transforming high streets across the country. If successful, the council would have around £11m dedicated to the project through a package of funding. Work begins on stateof-the-art Mo Mowlam Academy Construction is underway at a new multimillion-pound special school which will benefit young people and families for years to come. The Mo Mowlam Academy is being erected opposite Redcar and Cleveland College on Corporation Road and is expected to be completed at the end of this year. The academy will replace the Grangetown special school that was previously known as Pathways School and has a limited capacity of 66 pupils. The new school will be able to accommodate up to 100 primary and secondary school pupils and is part of Horizons Specialist Academy Trust. Residents are being encouraged to have their say on the proposals before the bid is submitted. Councillor Wayne Davies, the council’s cabinet member for economic development, said: “This bid is a fantastic opportunity for our area, so we are encouraging as many people as possible to get involved and have their say. “Our vision is to transform Loftus into a modern market town providing facilities and attractions for residents and a memorable destination for our visitors. “Loftus is close to the Cleveland Way and on a key route from Teesside to Whitby and the North York Moors. “We want to make sure people come to visit and stay here in Loftus, we want to create jobs for local people and we want our businesses to thrive.” TEES STUDENTS RECRUITED IN FIGHT AGAINST COVID-19 Six Teesside students have been recruited by a company at the forefront of the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. Absolute Antibody, based at the Wilton Centre, works with 14 of the world’s top 15 pharmaceutical companies who are trying to develop a vaccine or treatment for the virus. “Everybody here is focused on the fact that we are potentially assisting in resolving this massive issue,” said Dr Catherine Bladen, Absolute Antibody’s chief operating officer. To support the work of Dr Bladen’s team of 30, the six students – all studying at northern universities – have been temporarily employed to help. Techconsult UK aims for growth after MBO Specialist engineering and technical staffing company Techconsult UK is aiming for growth after a buyout by two of its management team. Originally part of Norwegiancompany Techconsult Norway, the business has been acquired by managing director Steve Guest and finance director Sarah Taylor. Techconsult UK, based in the heart of the UK petrochemical and process industries at Wilton International, provides technical and engineering talent to clients operating in a range of industry sectors on a permanent, temporary and contract basis. The new owners will implement a three-year growth plan. POST-LOCKDOWN PLANS DRAWN UP TO IMPROVE SAFETY Plans have been drawn up to safely reopen Redcar and Cleveland’s high streets and to give more space to cyclists and pedestrians as lockdown eases. The council has received two pots of government funding to allow members of the public to have more space and stay within social distancing rules. Measures include new signs, street markings and temporary barriers to help people keep their distance. The council is also consulting with local businesses in the borough’s busiest places such as Guisborough, Redcar and Saltburn to see if and what further physical changes need to be implemented in the coming weeks.
