Annaliese, from Stockton-on-Tees, had previously worked at Hartlepool’s Tilly Bailey and Irvine LLP Solicitors since 1996 and felt it was time for a new challenge. ANDY BROADBENT, NEW COLLEGE DURHAM New College Durham has announced the appointment a new principal and chief executive. Andy Broadbent has taken over in the top role at the Framwellgate campus on the outskirts of Durham and replaced John Widdowson CBE who has retired after nearly 22 years in the role. After joining the college in 2004 as head of finance, Andy has helped guarantee financial stability for the college and ensured it can offer security to students while continuing to invest in course provision, facilities and support services. The college has been rated as financially outstanding by The Education and Skills Funding Agency for 10 consecutive years, under Andy’s guidance. Last January, Andy took on the role of deputy principal and chief financial officer, before being selected as principal to replace John Widdowson earlier this year. YEAH AND KAYLA TURNBULL, STARKOLD BUILDING SERVICES Local twins took sibling rivalry to the next level when they went up against each other for the same apprenticeship at a leading construction firm. Leah and Kayla Turnbull applied for the same financial trainee role at Starkold Building Services, one of the UK's largest national construction and logistics providers, based in Durham, and in doing so left such a big impression that they were each offered an apprenticeship at the company. The construction firm found the twins through the free recruitment service offered by Northern Skills Group, the training and apprenticeship arm of Middlesbrough College. The 18-year-olds’ CVs stood out thanks to their upbeat personalities and a great interview. As a result, Leah and Kayla now both have positions as financial trainees at Starkold. They will work with the main financial controller, learning how to do evaluations and general accountancy, and from November, Leah and Kayla will be on dayrelease from Starkold, completing their AAT Accountancy course in Newcastle over the next 15 months. CHRIS LEWIS, CASTLES AND COASTS HOUSING ASSOCIATION A housing association has announced its new chair. Castles & Coasts Housing Association, which has a site at Houghton-le-Spring and owns and manages more than 7,000 properties, has announced that Chris Lewis will step into a new role as board chair. He assumes the role in September, when the organisation’s current chair, Fiona Moore, retires after nine years of service. Chris had a 35-plus year career in a senior role in a multi-national pharmaceutical business before taking up his board member role with Castles and Coasts. JIM RODWELL, SUNDERLAND AFC Sunderland AFC appointed 49-year-old Jim Rodwell – a former board director of the Football Association – as their new chief executive officer earlier this year. Rodwell left his previous post as chief executive officer at Scunthorpe United to take up the role at the Stadium of Light. Rodwell also served as CEO at Notts County, and caretaker manager, director of football and chairman of Boston United, one of many clubs he played for as a defender. Lincolnshire-born, he actually started his playing days at Darlington FC and was with the Quakers from 1987-89 before going on to play for numerous lower and non-league clubs in a career which lasted more than 20 years. During that time, he played football in Malaysia (for Sabah State), captained the Great Britain University side at the World Student Games in Fukuoka in Japan, was twice named Rushden and Diamonds’ Player of the Year and in 2002 came third in ITV’s Britain’s Brainiest Footballer quiz. wear.business – the voice of business for the Wear region | 41
