Cove that was named after a deaf islander (whose full name is Jonathan Lambert). I am thrilled that Thorp recognizes the need to showcase the island for us all, especially as she acknowledges that some off-islanders have come to Martha's Vineyard trying to retrace the history of a signing community on the island. I want to close this President's Note recognizing that the outlook for Martha's Vineyard Sign Language has changed dramatically. While this signed language was once thought to be completely died out and confined to distant history, there is a revival of sorts of people and institutions attempting to rebirth the notion of an entire island using signed language.
