FOCUS ON STAMPING

Metal stamping, or pressing, converts flat metal sheet( or blanks), as well as coil, into specific shapes. It is a complex process that includes several metal forming techniques such as blanking; punching; flanging; drawing; embossing; trimming; coining and piercing. Stamping dies are the tools that shape and cut sheet metal parts.

Some of the most common types of metal stamping machines include mechanical, hydraulic, hydroforming and servo presses that are fitted with multiple dies to cut and shape metal sheets of stainless steel and metals such as aluminium, zinc and copper. Better control, greater speed and versatility, shorter cycle times and higher energy savings are just some of the hallmarks of the latest technologies.
“ Metal stamping is a manufacturing process that holds precision at its very core. It’ s a repeatable process that guarantees little to no variation between parts, ensuring peace of mind for a customer. Particularly for highvolume production runs, metal stamping can be a highly efficient solution. After initial set-up cost and tooling investment, metal stamping is a highly economical method of production. Using automated manufacturing methods, the cost per part can be dramatically reduced,” said stamping specialist, Brandauer.
The global power press market is characterised by a mix of long-established industrial groups and newer technologyfocused entrants. Press manufacturers are differentiating themselves through modular design concepts that allow presses to be customised for specific applications. Servodriven systems, hybrid hydraulic-electric configuration and advanced CNC controls are now common in the portfolios of toptier suppliers. These innovations enable precision, lower energy consumption and better adaptability to diverse production requirements.
Global market trends
According to analyst Research and Markets, the metal stamping market grew from US $ 210.37 billion in 2025 to US $ 221.28 billion in 2026. It is projected to reach US $ 309.58 billion by 2032, advancing at a CAGR of 5.67 %.
“ Material innovation, through high-strength steels and light alloys, is changing the way that engineers approach part design and tool longevity. Early collaboration between designers and stampers mitigates costly iterations. Servo press technology and digitalisation, such as closed-loop forming control and real-time monitoring, are driving greater operational precision and reducing downtime. Supply chain resilience is now critical, with companies diversifying sourcing and investing in localised inventory to manage risk amid tariff policy shifts and evolving

logistics landscapes,” said the analyst.
Automation, customisation, the integration of artificial intelligence( AI) and machine learning( ML), as well as sustainability, are key trends in pressing and stamping operations. Innovations in tooling, such as high-speed progressive dies and 3D-printed dies, further shorten lead times and enhance design flexibility. Additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing, also affecting custom metal stamping. While traditional stamping can produce lots of parts quickly, 3D printing offers new opportunities for smaller batches of more complex, custom designs.
As designs become more advanced and lightweighting gains priority, manufacturers need stamped parts with complex geometries that maintain structural integrity. This can involve multi-stage stamping processes for intricate designs and high-tensile-strength material forming for durability and weight reduction.
“ The global metal forming industry is entering a decisive phase as automation, energy efficiency and digital integration reshape how manufacturers design, produce and deploy heavy equipment. Within this evolving landscape, top power press manufacturers are under increasing pressure to deliver not only higher tonnage
