Under the International Monetary Fund ’ s ( IMF ’ s ) baseline forecast , growth is slowing from last year ’ s 6.1 percent to 3.2 per cent this year and 2.9 per cent next year ( downgrades of 0.4 and 0.7 percentage points from April ). The world , it says , may soon be teetering on the edge of a global recession and multilateral cooperation will be key in many areas .
We are experiencing “ the first truly global energy crisis in history .” We examine the implications of rising energy prices for manufacturing on page 32 of this issue . We also highlight a new , advanced production line for manufacturing presshardened components for the automotive industry on page 26 . You can also read our report from CECIMO ’ s General Assembly meeting in Edinburgh , which included forecasts for European machine tool production and policy debates on the future of manufacturing ( page 22 ).
