Made in Steel

Ecological transition ; regionalisation of markets and neo-protectionism ; digital innovation ; economic acceleration after the COVID-19 crisis - these are just some of the macro trends that are changing the steel value chain and will be discussed during the ninth edition of the Made in Steel conference and exhibition in Milan , Italy , from 5-7 October 2021 .
“ It will be different from 2019 ,” said Emanuele Morandi , President and managing director of Made in Steel , adding that it will focus not so much on quantity as on the quality of content and the ability to generate ideas and relationships . The key words , he said , will be “ renaissance , rebirth and restart .”
Made in Steel is dedicated to the international steel supply chain . It is organised by Siderweb - The steel community , the main Italian body for information , analysis and consultancy specialising in the steel industry . The event is both a showcase and a cultural hub which ( through conferences , fora and roundtables ) aims to “ promote the essential elements for corporate growth , competitive collaboration and exchange of information .”
On Wednesday 6 October 2021 , the Federacciai general meeting will be held in the Siderweb Conference Room at 2.30 p . m . The full conference programme includes European steel forecasts ; sustainability ; distribution ; the ‘ steel of tomorrow ’; markets and supply chains as well as steel consumption figures . n

Encouraging apprenticeships

As thousands of young people across the UK prepared to receive their A-level and GCSE results , Make UK has highlighted the growing demand for apprentices from the engineering and manufacturing sector .
Research from Make UK , the manufacturer ’ s organisation in the UK , shows that while fewer than half ( 47 %) of UK manufacturers took on an apprentice in the last year , nearly six in 10 ( 57 %) are now looking to recruit an engineering or manufacturing apprentice in the next twelve months .
The survey of 165 employers forms part of a wider report by Make UK , which welcomes over 400 apprentices every year to its Technology Hub in Aston , Birmingham ( UK ), from customers including Jaguar Land Rover , Severn Trent , Ishida and Ibstock .
Stephen Mitchell , Director of Apprentices and Technical Training , Make UK , said : “ I ’ d urge anyone receiving their results this week who hasn ’ t made a final decision on their future to consider an apprenticeship . It ’ s a great alternative to other higher education options - not least because you ‘ earn while you learn ’. Apprenticeships can help unlock our recovery to rebuild our economy , communities and create high-quality jobs in the coming years .
“ At Make UK , we know first-hand the benefits of apprenticeships for the sector . At our Technology Hub not only do we train hundreds of apprentices each year , but we work hard to inspire the next generation of future makers .”
Make UK represents 20,000 UK companies of all sizes , from start-ups to multinationals , across engineering , manufacturing , technology and the wider industrial sector . It directly represents over 5,000 businesses who are members of the organisation . n
