FOCUS ON MATERIALS

Images: Shutterstock. com. and fit-out, contractors and end users are increasingly demanding cradle-to-gate carbon data. Low-carbon stainless steel is what that expectation looks like in practice.
These three examples span very different sectors and scales. What they share is the recognition that the embedded carbon of a material is now a commercial and competitive concern, rather than a future consideration to be dealt with later down the line.
A strong position in a changing market
With evolving regulatory frameworks such as the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism( CBAM) in Europe, transparency and carbon performance are becoming increasingly important.
By placing a carbon cost on imports equivalent to that faced by EU producers, CBAM levels the playing field and ensures that cheaper, higher-emission material from outside the EU no longer has a built-in price advantage.
For stainless steel, where product carbon footprints vary widely by producer, production route and energy source, the practical consequence is direct.
This development creates a clear opportunity. Companies that adopt lowemission materials early position themselves ahead of the curve, both environmentally and economically.
Circle Green enables stainless steel users across the value chain to meet forthcoming requirements, strengthen their sustainability credentials and differentiate in their markets. Combining deep metallurgical expertise with a strong commitment to sustainability, it empowers customers to reduce their carbon footprint without changing their designs, specifications or expectations.
The stainless steel we produce today will be part of the world for decades to come. With ultra-low carbon production, we can ensure that this future is not only durable and high-performing but also significantly more sustainable. n

About Outokumpu

Outokumpu’ s vision is to pioneer materials and technologies that power tomorrow. As a global specialist in sustainable stainless steel, it is accelerating the green transition with development of low-CO₂ metals and solutions across the stainless-steel value chain and beyond.
“ Our business is based on the circular economy: our products are made from more than 90 % recycled materials, which we turn into fully recyclable stainless steel with up to 75 % lower carbon footprint than the industry average. This steel is utilised in various applications across society including infrastructure, energy, industrial applications and household appliances. With our new EVOLVE strategy, we focus on maximizing value in sustainable stainless steel while expanding our offering in advanced materials & alloys, ferrochrome and innovative technologies,” it told ISMR.
“ We operate production sites in Finland, Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, the United States and Mexico whilst our mine in Kemi, Finland, is the only chrome mine within the European Union,” it added.
In 2025, Outokumpu’ s revenue was 5.5 billion euros. Outokumpu employs approximately 8,600 professionals in nearly 30 countries, with its headquarters in Helsinki, Finland.
