Generative AI growth in manufacturing
Generative AI ( artificial intelligence ) has been growing at a significant rate , with technology companies such as Microsoft investing US $ 10 billion into OpenAI this year . The excitement around generative AI in manufacturing comes from building out potential use cases , scaling from creating new designs to ultimately overhauling entire production processes .
According to global technology intelligence firm ABI Research , manufacturers can tie investments in generative AI to additional revenues with a significant spike of US $ 4.4- billion from 2026 to 2029 . By 2033 , revenue added from the use of generative AI in manufacturing will reach US $ 10.5 billion , according to the analyst .
“ Generative AI has growth that will derive from functionality and use cases across market verticals . The deployment of generative AI will come in three waves as the technology matures , with manufacturing seeing the largest revenue growth during the second and third waves . During the second and third waves of adoption , generative AI will be deployed into four domains of manufacturing : design , engineering , production and operations ,” explained James Iversen , Manufacturing and Industrial Industry Analyst , ABI Research .
“ Design will see the fastest mainstream deployment with use cases , such as generative design and MBOM ( manufacturing bill of materials ) as well as EBOM ( electrical bill of materials ) reductions , already enjoying existing solution offerings from companies such as Siemens and Microsoft . Engineering , production and operations use cases will take longer and require further maturity from generative AI providers due to the complexity of the tasks and required model training ,” added the analyst .
Use cases for generative AI in manufacturing can be compared by looking at expected TTV ( time to value ) and ROI ( return on investment ). For the four domains , the top performers are :
■ Design : Generative design , part consolidation .
■ Engineering : Tool path optimisation , part nesting .
■ Production : Product quality root cause analysis , correction of bugged software code .
■ Operations : Inventory stock and purchasing period management , employee work path optimisation .

Both manufacturers and manufacturing software providers should prioritise topperforming use cases as they yield the highest returns and can be easily built out with existing generative AI capabilities , added the analyst .
“ Starting from the ground up , implementing these use cases will lay the groundwork for more extensive use cases . It is important not to jump the gun and develop high-functioning use cases that will see little implementation as trust in generative AI will need to be built up before overhauling significant portions of current manufacturing operations ,” Iversen advised . n

ISMR previewed the 9th Schweisstec international trade fair for joining and the 16th Blechexpo international trade fair for sheet metalworking in its September issue . This key meeting place for global players in sheet metalworking will be held from 7-10 November 2023 at the Stuttgart Exhibition Centre ( Germany ). The event encompasses nine halls which are now fully booked . The Blechexpo / Schweisstec event takes place every two years at Messe Stuttgart . “ The trade fair duo presents complete process sequences for modern , futureproof , sheet-metal processing . An impressive supplementary programme includes presentation of the ‘ best Award 2023 ’, the ‘ Blechexpo Steel Convention 2023 ’, the ‘ futureSteel ’ congress and an expert forum ,” the show organiser , P . Sheet metal , pipe and profile processing technologies can be found in Halls 1 , 3 , 5 and 9 . Halls 4 and 6 are reserved for stamping technologies . Cutting , joining and fastening technologies will be presented in Hall 7 .
Hall 8 will focus on pressing and forming technologies . Steel and metal services , as well as surface finishing technology , will be addressed in Hall 10 .

The “ Blechexpo Steel Convention 2023 ” will take place in the forum area in Hall 10 at noon on the first day of the trade fair and will focus attention on “ Challenges in the Steel Markets in 2023 .” The convention will be organised by the Stahl-Kommunikation Agency . A “ futureSteel ” congress has also been organised for the second day of the trade fair in cooperation with Marketsteel Media from Düsseldorf .
The daily Exhibitor Forum has now been further expanded ; speakers from exhibiting companies will hold presentations on all trade fair days at various forums aligned to the thematic structure of the exhibition halls for the first time at Blechexpo / Schweisstec 2023 . This includes the Stamping Forum in Hall 4 ( 1FO-01 ), the Schweisstec Forum in Hall 7 ( 7515 ), the BEST Forum in hall 9 ( 9315 ) and the Steel Forum in Kongress West . Additional special forums with the ZVEI , IBU and EFB associations will be held on the third day of the trade fair on 9 November 2023 .
