PRODUCT REVIEWS

High-tensile steel for automotive cold forming

Japan ’ s JFE Steel Corporation , one of the world ’ s leading integrated steel producers , and Germany ’ s largest steelmaker , thyssenkrupp Steel Europe , have jointly launched a new 980 and 1180MPa class high-strength steel for coldforming .
“ These products represent higher yield strength and higher ductility , especially excellent local ductility , compared to conventional high-tensile steels . These characteristics contribute to further weight reduction of the automobile body frame ( Body in White ) and better crash safety performance , as well as higher productivity and lower manufacturing costs because the complex components can be formed by conventional cold- ( press / roll ) forming processes without using the hot-stamping process ,” said the companies .
“ In the current vehicle design , energy savings , weight reductions for reduced CO₂ emissions and crash safety performance are required . However , the higher strength of steel for weight reduction inevitably means inferior formability , and it has been difficult to apply higher strength steel to more complex components ,” they explained .
To overcome this challenge , JFE and thyssenkrupp Steel have developed these products by designing a new steel composition and microstructure , particularly focusing on the local ductility of steel and by establishing a new heattreatment method utilising the quenching and partitioning process . These products can be supplied globally for automotive applications .
“ The strength levels of these products are 980 and 1180MPa , with various types of coating or uncoated , galvannealed and galvanized . They are designed for wide applications to next-generation vehicles
including battery electric vehicles . In addition , we continue to jointly develop products with even higher strength levels ,” added the companies .
Thyssenkrupp Steel has set itself the goal of producing three million tonnes of CO₂-neutral steel per year from 2030 onwards , and to make its steel production fully climate-neutral by 2045 . n

Driving performance

At EuroBLECH 2022 , Voith Turbo will be presenting its compact variable-speed pump drives , DrivAx IQ4 and DrivAx RQ4 . The new drives expand the performance spectrum of the DrivAx family .
Other highlights at the drive specialist ’ s booth include the self-contained servo drives DrivAx CLDP , whose ten-year history is being continued with new sizes , and the DrivAx CLCP , developed for robot applications . The specially developed DrivAx PDSC and DrivAx PSH press drives are suitable for use in presses from 500kN upwards .
“ DrivAx PSH is our resource-saving servohydraulic press drive for almost unlimited high forces with high productivity . In the DrivAx PSH press- drive , the variable-speed
DrivAx IPS pump drives replace the valve and control technology . This allows optimum adaptation of force and speed to the press process and simplifies the design of the drive ,” explained Voith Turbo .
“ The intelligent control allows very flexible use of the press . Productivity increases and the parts produced are of exceptionally high quality . The complete system has a modular design and includes the aggregate technology , control technology and software as well as sensors and safety modules ,” it added .
Founded in 1867 , the company today has
The DrivAx PSH servo-press drive . around 20,000 employees , sales of € 4.3 billion and locations in over 60 countries worldwide . It is one of the larger family-owned companies in Europe . The Group division , Voith Turbo , is part of the Voith Group . n
