Austrian grain and seed processing specialist , Cimbria Heid , decided to replace its 130-year-old punching machine with a TruPunch 5000 that integrates the functions of seven machines into one for greater efficiency benefits .
Austrian company , Cimbria , was planning to replace a 130-year-old punching machine , a genuine piece of industrial history . Several machine suppliers considered the requirements , but it was German sheet metal specialist , TRUMPF , that took on the challenge . Ultimately , the TRUMPF TruPunch 5000 not only replaced the historic machine but also integrated the functions of seven machines into one .
The sheet that production workers must carefully balance and clamp onto the old punching machine weighs 40kg . Row by row , the machine advances the sheet . The punching head lowers consistently , pressing the mould into the thin material to make twelve indentations , then more movement , twelve more indentations and so on . It will cover two metres in one direction and two metres back , until the entire sheet is filled .
The sheet that is created will later be used to sort seeds .
The punching technology is 130 years old , dating back to the early days of the Cimbria Heid company , and was due to be retired .
